Cupcake Tower (of Terror) DIY

Ask and you shall receive, my lovelies.

Now I’m not gonna lie and claim complete originality on this one- a quick google search will turn up all sorts of similar DIY cupcake stands, varying only by theme and degree of difficulty.

I will say that this DIY is extremely easy, crazy cheap, super fast, and made from items you may actually have lying around the house.  So that’s what I’ve got goin’ on.

Let the cupcake madness commence.

1. Gather your Supplies:

cupcaket1

    You will need:

    Cardboard Cake Rounds- 8”, 10”, 12”, 14”, 3 each

Decorative Paper- 12×12 works for the smaller rounds/wrapping

    paper is great for

    the larger rounds

    Ribbon- 4 yards 5/8” or 1/2”

3 Full Canned Goods- varying sizes

    Hot Glue Gun

    Zots/Glue Stick (optional)

    2. Measure/Cut Paper to Cover the Cans

    cupcaket2

Use a soft measuring tape to measure the height and

circumference of your cans and cut appropriate sizes of paper. I

stamped mine with this cute strawberry stamp because the

birthday girl is gaga for strawberries.

    3. Cover Cans With Decorative Paper

    cupcaket3

Secure the  paper to the cans using zots or hot glue

    4. Hot Glue Three Cake Rounds of Each Size Together

    cupcaket4

This one is pretty self explanatory right?

    5. Cut Decorative Paper to Cover Cake Rounds

    cupcaket5

Simply use the cake rounds as a guide and trace the various sized

circles onto your decorative paper. Cut out. This should yield 4

    different paper circles: 8”, 10”, 12”, 14”

    6. Affix Decorative Paper to Cake Rounds

    cupcaket6

Simply use zots/dots of hot glue/glue stick to adhere your

decorative paper rounds to the top of the cake rounds.

    7. Wrap the Edges of each Round with Ribbon

    cupcaket7

Attach ribbon with a bead of hot glue every 6 inches or so.

    8. Glue each Round to a Can

    cupcaket8

Glue the smallest can to the bottom of the smallest round using

hot glue around the edge/lip of the can. You can totally skip this

step- but it does add a little extra stability!

    9. Stack ‘Em Up

    Need I say more?

    10. Admire Your Work in Action

    cupcaket11

I was definitely pretty pleased with this last minute DIY adventure and hope that you are too!  And I would love to see the rad themes you come up with to make this project your own!  It’s so easy peasy, I might even make a little stripetastic one (6/8/10”) to display our vegan/gluten free desserts on…

How are you displaying your sweets? And are you offering special options for your guests with dietary restrictions or is that just cuckoo-bananas?

    Awesome-Sauce New Toy!

Greetings from Invitation Land! I just couldn’t resist sharing my new toy.

It’s an alphabet rolling stamp and it’s rad!

Seriously. My boss lady (as in the one I work with) and I became obsessed with finding this little tool after one of the stores we frequent started stamping our actors’ names onto a little tag on the bag. Cutest. Thing. Ever. And a vintage typewriter font? I die.

We started dreaming of all the things we could stamp and of course my mind went immediately to all the wedding stuff. We searched all over Los Angeles and beyond, only to finally discover this little tool here. Yes. Etsy to the rescue once again. Surprised? I’m not.

Anyhoo, a few weeks ago I decided to do our calligraphy myself (well our budget decided) and I thought maybe I could use the stamp as a bit of a shortcut and just write the name, then stamp the address. Not so sure about that anymore because while I LOVE how it looks, spinning those little letters around takes forever. I love the vintage feel though, and even the little imperfections. It’s definitely not the neatest tool (as in cleanest/most precise) but it is pretty awesome in my book.

So what do you think?  Keeping in mind that our shindig is a quirky vintage/modern lovefest, do you prefer a mix of calligraphy/stamp or would you go with all calligraphy?

    Bouquet Sneak Peek!

    Happy Weekend!

It’s coffee, sunshine, and crafts around here!

And remember this little project (aka, my bouquet):

Yes. It’s actually happening. So far I’ve wired all of my vintage flowers and I’m pretty stinkin’ happy with ‘em. Next I’ll actually work them into a more cohesive/bouquet like form-so stay tuned for that.

What about you? What are YOU doing this weekend?

    Broom Swagger

This one’s cute. (for a broom) Wait. Do you like this one? (yup it’s still a broom) Okay. Okay. I found it. The perfect one. Isn’t it pretty? (and yup, it’s still a broom)

These are excerpts from a conversation you may have overheard in the Awesome household one grey Sunday morning.

Shortly thereafter I did the unthinkable and ordered our jumping broom. I ORDERED it. I decided that broom-making was one aspect of DIY that I really did not need delve into four months before our wedding (if ever), ya know?  But oh how I considered it.

I did the research. I found plenty of helpful how-to guides (and a whole new world of ecofriendly house blogs to delve into post wedding). I sourced suppliers of broom corn, hemp cord and what most professional broom makers refer to as the “foot held apparatus.” Huh?  I started looking for inspiration pics of what our perfect jumping broom would look like and I found some really beautiful (say it with me, “for a broom!”) options. So many options that would be so much more affordable to just order in fact, that I did just that.

Witness the wonderful world of brooms you never knew existed:

    The Basic Kitchen Broom:

    The Turkey Wing Broom:

    The Witches Broom or Besom:

    The Guitar Broom:

Most importantly I learned a really valuable DIY lesson on this one folks. And I’m not gonna be shy about passing this newfound wisdom along to you all. So pay attention and take notes:

You do not need to DIY every damn wedding detail. If it’s not going to bring you joy or save you money, just don’t do it.

Yes it seems obvious. Yes it’s been said before. Yes it really took broom shopping for me to drill this one into my bride-addled brain. Go figure.  And you know what?

I couldn’t be more thrilled with our (broom) purchase. We are supporting a craftsperson who is going to provide us with a beautiful piece of art to use in our wedding ceremony. It will be our broom because we slap some flowers on it and jump over it at our wedding, whether or not we grow/harvest/soak/tie the damn broom corn ourselves.

Do you feel the pressure to DIY every damn detail too? Did you ditch any DIY projects that really weren’t worth your time in favor of spending/saving a dime?

AND any guesses as to which broom we chose? I’m not telling (yet) so you’ll just have to stay tuned for Broom Swagger Part II!

    Voila! Any questions?

PS. Make sure your book isn’t too old or your cranes will crumble. I had to sub a much newer (but still french) Harry Potter for Fables to achieve crane-tastic results!

Any destruction of literature in your future? Any other bananas bridal ideas to save a dime?
