One year ago today we got engaged on our rooftop in downtown Los Angeles, and spent the day celebrating with champagne, sunshine, and friends.
Today I’m sitting at the DMV waiting to change my name, and thinking about our wedding day, which once seemed FOREVERandadayaway, but is really happening in just a few short months now. Yowza! Yippee! Yikes! Mostly yippee though!
It’s been a crazy year of living, thinking, and planning. A year of thoughtful transition and (sometimes) difficult conversation as we plan this wedding, and more importantly, as we plan our life together. A good, joyful, hard year.
We’ve lived and planned a wedding on one income, raised a special needs puppy, moved to a house with a (potential) veggie garden, started new jobs, quit said jobs when they failed to EVER pay for four months of work, nearly foiling our wedding plans (LA residents beware: Mendocino Farms doesn’t pay their employees) and somehow managed not to kill each other. Although we’ve come close a few times.
And that’s okay too.
Because I’ve learned that arguments aren’t about winning. Sometimes they are about our egos, our insecurities, or just our bad day. You can let them go, or even be the one to apologize without being the loser.
And I’ve learned to say yes. Yes to this relationship. Yes to things that are important to C, even when they aren’t initially important to me. Yes to making those things important to me too. And I want to move into our married life together saying yes to each other and making the things that matter to each of us a priority for us both. yesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyesyes!
And I’ve realized that most of my favorite moments with C aren’t big or complicated. I truly hope that our wedding, our marriage, and our life together reflect that perfect simplicity.
Here’s a look at our last year as single(ish) ladies:

And here’s to looking far far into the future. Like FOREVERandaday far.
I love you baby. I think you’re awesome. And I’m over being engaged. Let’s get married already, mkay?
Any other loooooong engagements out there? Are you savoring the moments or are you ready to move on to married life already too?

Yo People!
Happy Monday! Seriously happy! BEST. MONDAY. EVER.
Have I got some bananas, out-of-this-world, effing awesome news for you! Are you ready for it? Are you sitting down?
Yours truly is gonna be a bee! I know you all know what I’m talking about already, but if for some reason you don’t (?) then head on over to Weddingbee and check me out-
Miss Stripes is the new bee buzzing into town today and I’m so excited to share our big fat awesome two-bride wedding with the Weddingbee community! And don’t worry- I’ll still be posting all the goodness here on Ms. Awesome Weds too, b/c I love you guys and your genius comments and sass make my day. Seriously.
So let’s talk for a minute about this decision to blog for Weddingbee (who we all know is owned by eharmony). It’s not one I took lightly, believe you me. Nope. eharmony skeeves me out a little, but I sure do love Weddingbee! In the past LGBTQ Bees and their allies left the hive due to the whole bought-by-eharmony-thing and I totally respect and admire their decision. I kept debating if I should even apply to be a bee b/c of this sticky little ownership situation.
AND then I said eff it! In my world there is no better way to advocate for marriage equality, than to do so in the most personal way I know how, and that’s to talk about my OWN impending gay nuptials. To as many people as possible. And the opportunity to do so for the giant and diverse Weddingbee readership is pretty amazing.
So that’s that. Feel free to agree or disagree with me (but be nice) and please keep reading! I promise to keep the awesome coming!
xoxo

Miss Stripes
ps. Please accept this post as an explanation for all future references to stripes/cute nicknames including stripe references and general stripy silliness. Know that I have not gone bonkers or developed a bizarre and unfounded stripe fixation, but that I’m just too lazy to start another separate “Weddingbee only” blog.

Meet Aly & Elroi and be prepared for some serious HOTness!
This wedding already went around the blogs way back when, but it’s so completely and totally amazing that I can’t help but post it here in the hopes that some of you haven’t seen it. And if you have- look again. And again. And again. I know I will.
All photos courtesy of Our Labor of Love. Check ‘em out! If I was in Atlanta or had serious $$$ I’d be ALL OVER them. (And if we didn’t already have the MOST amazing photographer ever- but that’s for another post.)
So let’s start with this amazing shot of aly’s dress (made by a friend no less!). There is something so sweet about this barefoot pic.

And something SO sweet about love.

And some more awesome:

And finally- nothing like a bride after my own heart: a dachshund!
(awesome side note: the couple has 5 dogs and they were part of the wedding festivities too!)

And if you’re itching for more you can:
Read Aly’s write-up over on Kvetch. It’s beautiful and will make you cry like a baby.
Check out the WHOLE damn gallery over at Our Labor of Love. sigh. happiness.
Watch the LOGO show all about Aly/Elroi’s wedding.
And not to spoil any good news, but if you’re in love with this couple the way I am, then you’ll be so happy to see:

(which I stole from another post over at Our Labor of Love)
Congrats! So awesome!

First up: Sam & Julia.
Beautiful photographs: Closed Circle Photography.
Thanks Kelly! Boston area brides should check out her work stat!
This wedding is absolute & total perfection! Seriously gorgeous brides, awesome tattoos, beautiful fall decorations, and a really amazingly happy family. This is pretty much the wedding I dream of! Vintage gowns, a post-ceremony tuxedo, that shot of the bridesmaids on the bed? The details are awesome, but screw the details! Do you see how damn happy everyone is in pretty much EVERY photo? Totally amazing. I can only hope for such complete and total joy and happiness on our wedding day! Totally awesome. Are you ready for it?

so totally awesome.

I’m long winded- I know.
So let me just get right to the big reveal.
Our amazing wedding location is Heritage Square Museum! It’s an amazing living history museum comprised of eight historic buildings including a barn and a box car!!!
Check it.

a TRAIN! augh!

cheese-tastic photo collage credit: me, me, me. (except for “cold beer” photo, here)
It’s gorgeous right?
Remember the equation:
awesome location + booze + amplified music = expensive.
Well not at Heritage Square!
They were super nice and even gave us a great deal for booking so far in advance!
AND did you notice the BARN & TRAIN. I die.
Double Score!
Did we compromise at all? Only a little….
*Our wedding turns into a pumpkin at 10pm.
So we’ll definitely be having an awesome after-party somewhere in downtown! Moreover, this will allow for all those amazing gritty/urban/crazily-lit photographs that make my heart flutter.
So eff you Marvimon.
*No fire of ANY kind= no beautiful candlelight or sparkler send-off.
I guess I’ll be looking into those make your own LED posts all over the wedding blogosphere.
Pretty minimal compromises/awesome solutions if you ask me.
*There are seriously a million bad-ass locations in los angeles and beyond, especially if you have $$$$. There are also a million bad-ass locations if you’re broke- either way I’d love to see yours!
